In hindsite...

I have read on the internets that Daniel Radcliffe (He who is Harry Potter) will turn 18 this month and when he does, he will obtain control of $40 million dollars.

Wow. I was, you know, going to get him a card...or something but uh...

Anyway. I can only hope that Mr. Radcliff will have wise and helpful hands to guide him away from the kinds of temptations $40 MILLION can buy. I am tempted to look back at my life and wonder what I might have done with $40 million when I was 18 and am forced to conclude that I would have no freakin clue. I would likely have saved some of it, but there would be some pretty large purchases that I would be regretting about now.

Like the full sized millenium falcon in my back yard, or the Hoth Base (complete with Imperial walkers) I built in Norway. Or perhaps the strip club with a Star Trek theme. The possibilities are endless.

What would you regret having bought or done with if you'd been given $40 million on your 18th birthday? And if you say "I would have invested it all in a broad range of well managed blah blah blah: you're LYING.

I would have started a comic book, rented an apartment away from my folks, and put off college for another few years to write, draw, and act. But when I finally went, I would have gone to Yale.

Today, I'd just buy a pirate ship.

I would have invested $10 Million and spent $30 million trying to become a race car driver.

Or maybe whores and beer, not sure which...

Dude,

This is me we're talking about (the 18 year-old me that is). And at 18 I would have spent it all on cheap hookers and good drugs (or is that good hookers and cheap drugs). At any rate, I would now be mugging people in the red light district of Amsterdam and living in a box behind some brothel.

I am truely blessed then that I did not win $40,000,000 in 1982 or I would never have started working on my Master's Degree or have the two lovely little girls that are now the center of my Universe.

(Oh yes and my lovely, neurotic wife would be a much happier person for never having met me.)

Honest to Dog, at 18, I really and truly *would* have invested a big chunk o' change... AFTER hiring someone to determine exactly how much $$$ I would need to Never Have to Worry About Medical Expenses Ever Again. Then I would have bought Ed's love.

...and every book I could conceivably want. Gone to a school with a good pre/veterinary medicine program (but NOT OSU). Become a vet. Lived as a hermit in Alaska or the Canadian Rockies for at least a few years, surrounded by books, cats, and dogs (Norwegian Elkhounds and Huskies). Naturally, I'd take a break from the hermit lifestyle to do Pennsic in an Absurdly Huge and Decadent RV (filling it with lots of lovely shiny sparklies from Merchants').

Now, at my advanced age, I'd pay off all the bills, buy a newer construction home on a vast, wooded lot (with plenty of room for veggie and flower gardens, a multicar garage for Ed's fleet, a volleyball court, and a Back Forty for the inevitable Shortage of Corgis). And *still* do vet tech school.

Buy Ed's love? I thought that was free?

Well, believe it or not. I would have given $30M of it to an investor (not Billy Joel's Uncle), more like my father who is good with investments.

The $10M Balance: Hookers, Strippers, Débutantes, Large Quantities of Jack Daniels (like boat loads), and a open line of credit at the bunny ranch.

and I would Franchise that SCIFI Nudie bar

I would have been looking to buy a small island-nation with cannon on the battlements and a phat satellite feed!

I would have diversified my portfolio among (1) secure government bonds, (2) Blue Chip stocks with a health annual dividend payment and (3) a blend of stocks in international emerging markets, energy, materials and health care.

On second thought...screw it. Place it on Double Zero and let it ride!!! Yeee Haaaa!!!!
